FIND A SALON

Get creative in 2025!

With the start of a new year, thoughts often turn to new resolutions. Lose weight, cut down the alcohol, get fit, get out more, make new friends, or how about find new ways to relax when not on the treadmill of working life?

We asked two of our busiest stylists what they do to help them switch off, but still keep their creative juices flowing, when they’re not rushed off their feet in the salon.

Ben Sutcliffe – KH Barber, Long Eaton and KH Hair Newark

Ben Sutcliffe KH Barber

Ben has worked in the industry for more than 30 years and, although barbering is most definitely his forte, he is also qualified in ladies’ hairdressing.

Day-to-day, Ben manages two KH Hair franchises (one alongside his lovely wife, Maxine) and also runs a busy column where he loves to spend time making his clients ‘look and feel a million dollars’.

When he’s not at work, he relaxes by creating some pretty impressive artwork!

Ben Abstract Landscape

“I have been painting and drawing since I could hold a brush or a pencil. Art was actually going to be my first career choice but, in 1987, university didn’t appeal to me, so hairdressing soon followed.

My revival for painting came in lockdown as a way of keeping my head clear and posting online as a way of cheering people up . It’s a great outlet for my imagination and creativity – and also my mental health.

I enjoy painting and drawing with lots of different mediums; oil, pastels etc and I paint whatever the mood takes me to – from landscape, to abstract, to doodles!”

Joanne (Charlie) Roe – KH Hair Leicester

Charlie has been with KH Hair since leaving school. She is a Wella Master Colour Expert and is a key member of the KH Hair Colour Team.

Day-to-day, Charlie helps manage the salon and train the Group’s new apprentices, which she finds very rewarding.

At home, as well as looking after her two children and her dog, Rolo, she loves to bake and decorate fabulous cakes! Next stop, the tent?

“I bake mostly for friends and family. I like to experiment, so it’s a good excuse to play around with different techniques. It’s also a great way to be creative after work and is very relaxing and therapeutic – great for my mental health!

I use a variety of colours and shapes which, I suppose, is not too dissimilar to colouring hair.

Sometimes I regret agreeing to bake for people, because I’m always so busy, but I enjoy it and love to see the end result. A bit like doing a big transformation in the salon!”
