You may be craving  smooth and shiny hair this winter but, during the colder months, it can seem impossible to calm those static locks. We asked Mary Geoghegan, stylist at KH Hair’s Nottingham salon, what causes static and if there’s anything we can do to combat it.

“Static is caused by a lack of moisture. As the weather gets colder, there is less humidity in the air which causes our hair to become drier.

Having the heating on doesn’t help as this further dries the hair.  Also, hats/scarves etc rub on the hair and contribute to drawing out even more moisture. Furthermore, using heated appliances such as straighteners to smooth the hair actually makes the problem worse as, again, the heat draws moisture out.

Tips to tackle the problem include using leave-in conditioner or a hydrating mask such as NanoKeratin. I also recommend Wella’s System Professional range of ‘Hydrate’ and ‘Smoothen’ shampoos and conditioners.”
